People everywhere are talking about their sicknesses and disease. We should be speaking the promises of God that guarantee protection to those who believe!
Mark 16:17-18 (NKJV) — “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; “they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Jesus said, “And these signs shall follow them that believe.... They shall take up serpents....” In this radical passage, Jesus says divine promises are available to those who believe. So if you believe, there are some amazing promises that are yours to claim right now.
Let’s see how these words of Jesus apply to us today.
The word “serpents” in verse 18 is a translation of the Greek word ophis, which simply means snakes. Many snakes were poisonous and very dangerous and life-threatening. Travelers feared the snakes along the undeveloped road system at that time. They often had to “blaze their own trail” to get to some cities and especially to remote places. Fear of being snake-bit along the way while traveling by foot was a major concern to travelers.
Luke 10:19 (NKJV) — “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
In Luke 10:19, Jesus said, “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” When Jesus spoke these words to His disciples, it was right after He had commanded them to go into the harvest fields of the world to reap the souls of men (see Luke 10:2-11). This verse was Jesus’ supernatural guarantee that when they went to preach, they would have supernatural protection against serpents, scorpions, and anything else Satan might use to try to stop or hurt them. This is why Jesus concluded by saying, “...Nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
Notice that in addition to serpents, Jesus also mentioned scorpions! One sting from the tail of a scorpion brings about horrible pain and could cause a person to be permanently paralyzed or even killed. When people took journeys by foot, they were just as terrified of getting a scorpion sting as they were of being snake bit. One wrong step meant disaster.
Jesus’ promise to His disciples — and to you and me — is that we will “tread on serpents and scorpions.” The word “tread” is the Greek word pateo, which simply means to walk. Jesus was telling us that even if we walk right over a scorpion or snake, we don’t have to worry because we have His Word on it, a divine protection against these natural dangers. This is a specific promise of supernatural protection for those who believe it.
But then Jesus added, “...And nothing shall by any means hurt you.” The word “hurt” is the Greek word adikeo, which means to suffer injustice or to suffer some kind of wrongdoing. The Greek uses a triple negative in this phrase. It literally says, “...And nothing (first negative), no (second negative), by no means (third negative), will injure or harm you.” Jesus said this in the strongest terms available to assure us that if we believe His promises, we will be divinely protected and supernaturally guarded from all forms of evil.
Jesus gave His disciples (and us) a promise of supernatural protection! If we will believe, things that would normally injure or kill others will have no effect on us whatsoever.
What exactly does this have to do with you and me?
This supernatural protection is activated in those of us who believe that God’s promise of protection will work for us. Whenever we enter dangerous territory or we’re in any dangerous situation, if we’re in fear, doubt, and unbelief, we will likely get into trouble. But if we stay in faith and believe, claiming God’s protection as ours, the enemy can’t do anything to hurt us! If we will speak to our mountain, with faith in God’s promises supernatural protection will activate and manifest in our lives!
Again, these promises belong to “those who believe.” If we want this promise of protection from evil influences, from disease, or from bad, poisonous foods or fatal substances, we must release our faith and activate this promise. Jesus provided everything needed for those of us who believe. He provided us with supernatural protection from disasters, calamities, snakes, scorpions, and all the works of the enemy!
Hey, it’s time to release our faith and start believing that Jesus meant what He said. This is not a time for silent prayer. Rebuke the spirit of fear and release your faith! The Gospel and the power of God is much stronger than anything that would try to hurt you!
Now, instead of begging God to fix the problem, speak to the mountain about God, and Believe what you say (Mk. 11:23-24). Fill in the blank, your mountain, and use your authority (Lk. 10:19) over the enemy!
Satan, I am serving you notice that you have no power over me! I tread on you, I walk all over you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, ________, you cannot come on my body! You are a defeated foe, a looser! As a believer, Jesus is Lord of my life and you must bow your knee to the name Jesus. Now dry up and BE GONE!
Snakes, scorpions, and ________, all the works of the enemy, you are nothing to me, and Jesus is all to me. Jesus is Lord! ________, you get out and stay out in Jesus’ Name!
Lord Jesus, I thank You for Your promise of supernatural safety as my words go forth. Bless Your Holy Name and thanks for awesome protection!
